Michael Powell, in his 2008 article in The New York Times, The American Wanderer, in All His Stripes, thinks out loud about the American tradition of rootlessness, using rich descriptors like:

Wanderers.  Migratory.   Steinbeck.   Wanderlust.   Roamers.   Immigrants.   Romance.   Drifters.   Gatsby.   "Bound N'oth Blues."   Shallow-rooted trees.   Footloose.   Unanchored.
