I was hopeful I'd be able to use my Google Voice number to make and receive calls while I am in Playa del Carmen. Alas, that is not to be, although I can receive voice mail via my laptop when folks call my GV number.
I can use gmail video chat, however, as long as the other person has signed on to same.
I've signed up with Skype and, after preliminary sound glitches, loaded myself up with some Skype credit, and have successfully called two land lines in the U.S. Cost = 2.3 cents per minute.
